Why Maple Lake?
A array of reasons – Mountain biking, kayaking, fishing, scenic lake with a overlook and hiking on several trails as part of Palos Trail System. Lastly, it’s a great local destination for viewing Fall Colors as well.

Maple Lake looked exquisite, as seen on July 8, 2023
For directions, just point to Maple Lake Boating Center.
Check out the official FPDCC portal to find more info on the preserve.
Kayak Rentals
There is no reservation needed, just head there and rent it on the fly. There isn’t much wait time mostly. Please check the official portal for the open hours.
The boat rentals place was well-stocked – we rented a few tandem and solo kayaks and were on our way in a few minutes.

The waiting area had picnic tables with umbrellas
The weather was a bit gloomy in the beginning.

Only the clouds, woods and water for company!
But soon enough, sun blazed through the clouds.

Notice the scenic overlook and a natural pier on the left
Here is a view of the lake from the scenic point.

The lake is quite placid, providing a perfect opportunity for first-time kayakers. My 10-year old did his first solo here.

Hiking at Palos Trail System
After getting a good upper body kayaking workout for an hour, we headed for a hike at the near-by trail.
Tip: Please use the official FPDCC maps for best info on trails. The directions at the site weren’t great.
We hiked the Yellow West trail for about a mile and then headed back.

The hike was mostly in the shade, shielding us from the summer sun.

There was also an access point to the Maple Lake.

There were some unmarked trails as well but we resisted the temptation to wander off.

And just like that, it was time to bid adieu to Maple Lake.

So long, Maple Lake!
Will be back here this Fall, to check out the foliage as well.
